Grompi Wot and the Shooting Sky Diamond - Chpt 1 Pt 1

Grompi Wot lived high up in the mountains in a place called Sumware Speshell. He was a funny little fellow about three feet high, if that, with big saucer-like green eyes and a cheery smile that lit up his whole face whenever something made him happy.
Mr. and Mrs. Wot only ever had the one child. They probably would have liked more, but their hole in the hillside home was just too small for any more than the three of them. The Wot family had lived in Sumware Speshell for thousands of years, as far as anyone knew.
There was only one other family that lived nearby, and that was the Hoo’s. There was a rumour at one time or another that the Wots were related to the Hoo’s, but that was never proven. Besides, they didn’t see that much of each other, which is understandable given that the two families were at least two mountains apart. The other thing was, that the Hoo’s were rumoured to be very, very tall, whereas the Wot’s were very, very small, which was fortunate for them, because otherwise they would not have fit into their hole in the hillside home.

Although their tiny dwelling was warm and cosy, there was little to see once inside. But the Wot’s had everything they needed. Pots to boil beetles in, and pans to cook scorpions and lizards. They even had a tea pot in which they would store the precious vanilla nuts which they had gathered in the spring months. I don’t think anybody ever told Mrs. Wot exactly what a tea pot was for, but nobody seemed to mind. When she poured the vanilla nuts into the big bowl on the small round dining table, everyone was happy. In fact, it was a very happy household indeed.
Each night, just before going to sleep, Grompi would sit and gaze in wonderment at the twinkling jewels of the night-sky through the little window beside his bed. It was always such a beautiful sight. One particular night, as Grompi looked out of his window, the sky seemed particularly spectacular. It was blanketed in beautiful sparkling diamonds against a bed of black velvet. Suddenly, and without warning, one of the biggest diamonds shot straight across the sky and disappeared just behind the mountain where the Hoo’s were rumoured to live. Grompi was in awe. Although he was a very happy little Wot, he could not get the beautiful diamond out of his head, and decided that he would head off to find it first thing in the morning. It would be the adventure of a lifetime, he thought.
